Ugh . . .

After typing all day long I finally finished tagging all of the MP3s of last year's Evangelical Theological Society Conference lectures. I wasn't interested in about 93 percent of what I was laboriously cataloging, which made the whole process all the more enjoyable. Beyond that, the one panel I was looking forward to listening to again was "joined in progress", which means that someone forgot to turn the microphone on until AFTER the more insightful comments were made (namely Jim Beilby's response to Merold Westphal about theology and the postmodern turn). Still, James D.G. Dunn's session with Scot McKnight, Don Hagner and Craig Evans seems to have been recorded flawlessly, as did some of the sessions by fellow bloggers Michael Bird, Alan Bandy, and Bryan Lee. My iPod is now a whole lot smarter than I am (not that it wasn't before all I had on it was Tom Petty and The White Stripes). Together with my other lectures, I now have about 547 hours of shower-time bliss.

Great blog, brother. Any news on possible improvements to the ETS recordings in the future? I ordered 5 tapes from 2004 (?), with Hays, Wright, Moo and others--almost all of it was subpar in sound quality, and some of it never made it onto the recording at all. Either Hays let loose with a long string of Hauerwas-grade explitives, or they seriously need to upgrade their recording...

Those forks sure do a number on your fingers after a while don't they?

Thanks, J.B.! I certainly hope it gets better. I hadn't tried the Hays lecture yet - I hope it's not indecipherable!

Jonathan,

When I started reading my paper the only persons in the Rome were myself and the moderator! That was depressing. Luckily, about 5 guys walked in half-way through my introduction - my self-esteem was salvaged.

Yikes! I would have wandered in myself, but I didn't notice that you were on the program until AFTER your session. Bummer. It would have been nice to meet you.

It's always awkward when a presentation turns into a date. I'm glad that you picked up a few listeners! I'm excited to hear your lecture (providing that the recording doesn't suck)!

Incidentally, congratulations on your publication in The Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus!!!

I think you need some medical attention for those fingers.

I was at the Hays lecture with Richard Longenecker at ETS 2005. Hays was engaging but he basically used the chapter "The Role of Scripture in Paul's Ethics" in his new book Converstion of the Imagination so you can read there what he said.

I didn't understand what you meant when you said you "finished tagging all of the MP3s of last year's ETS Conference lectures." Are those available somewhere on the net? I had to miss the Dunn/McKnight/Hagner/Evans session and would love to hear it. All the best. This my first time posting on your site.
